Nina Simone fans have had quiet their fill of the iconic music legend in the last few years. There was her tribute album, Nina Revisited, which featured Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Common and Lisa Simone. Then there was her Oscar nominated Netflix film, What Happened, Miss Simone? But there has also been talk of a Nina Simone biopic as far back as 2012. Mary J. Blige was originally casted in the film to play Simone, but had to back out due to scheduling conflicts. Actress Zoe Saldana ended up getting the role instead and Nina is now set to release next month.

The estate of Nina Simone is not thrilled with the casting though and expressed their concerns in 2012 when Zoe was first announced as the leading lady. They disapproved of her being able to carry out the role and having her skin darkened to play the late singer. Nina Simone’s daughter expressed that she would have rather seen Viola Davis or Kimberly Elise Play her mother. Things came to a head last night when whoever runs Nina Simone’s twitter account clapped back at a tweet from Zoe Saldana referencing the film. See it for yourself below and check out the trailer for the movie. Do you think Zoe can pull off this role?
