The Fate of the Furious - Movie Review

By: Nikki Jackson

With the Fast and Furious franchise, you pretty much know what type of movie you're getting. And this one doesn't disappoint. Was it noticeable that Brian (Paul Walker) wasn't in this installment? Absolutely! There was just that one missing piece you couldn't ignore. But the return of Deckard (Jason Statham) was an added bonus, as well as a few more surprises.
The action begins on a more calmer note with Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) in Cuba following their wedding. After winning a street race, Dom is “recruited” by Cipher (Charlize Theron) to work for her; and she has an offer he can’t refuse. Soon after, while on a mission with Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and the rest of the team, Dom appears to have gone rogue. His betrayal stings everyone and lands Hobbs in prison, where he is reunited with old enemy. Eventually, the two realize they have no choice but to work together, with Cipher and Dom going up against everyone else, and we learn what Cipher’s trump card is, which is the one thing that gets Dom to betray his friends. And that's pretty much the gist.
This movie is a lot of fun. But I didn't like that Brian's absence was never addressed.
All of that said, there's enough action-based mayhem to keep wide-eyes viewers engaged and entertained, and the film wisely continues with its comedy elements (mainly revolving around Tyrese Gibson's character and his overreactions to everything), all while including various cameos for diehard Furious fans. I rate this movie a 9 (a 10 for all the things I never knew cars could do!).
