An Irving, Texas (Suburb of Dallas) 19-year-old named Allante Edwards admitted causing severe injuries to a 1-year-old girl that led to her death. Edwards called the Irving Police Department on Jan. 4 and reported little Olivia Cangemi was unresponsive at a home in the 1900 block of Rosebud Drive.
Edwards had been babysitting Olivia and her two siblings, a 3-year-old girl and 6-month-old boy, Allante, Jr.
Olivia was taken to Children’s Medical Center, where she was found to have a severe brain injury and other internal injuries. She died after being removed from life support.
The police report revealed Olivia had brain swelling, healing rib fractures, and possible abdominal trauma. Six-month-old Allante, Jr. also had injuries from being beaten, including a bite mark on his cheek.
Edwards was interviewed about the chiildren's injuries and kept changing his story. Allante finally admitted to throwing the little girl across the room, revealing she did not talk or move afterwards. He then left her alone in her crib for 5 to 6 hours before dialing 911, court documents revealed.
Police arrested Edwards, 19, on two charges of injury to a child. However, after Allante's confession those charges were dropped and he now faces a capital murder charge.
The mother of the children, Jennifer Cangemi, spoke about her late daughter Olivia. She said, "She was the most sweetest, smart, beautiful little girl I have ever seen in my life."
Olivia's grandmother, Karen Cangemi, stated, "We want justice for Olivia. We want justice from what has been taken from our family."
Baby Olivia was on life support until Monday morning when her family made the tough decision to take her off. She passed away a short time later.
Olivia's mother donated her daughter's organs to help others. She explained, "Because she can live on through other children, and she helped about three to four other kids."
