A 20-year old Texas man named Pontrey O'Neal Jones has been charged with murder after stabbing his step-mother to death after she was celebrating a Dallas Cowboys win. Jones murdered Magdalena Ruiz right after she finished watching the Dallas Cowboys defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Magdalena aka Maggie posted about the Cowboys win on Facebook shortly before her death. The murder allegedly took place at about 10:40, just 12 minutes after Ruiz posted "WAY TO GO DALLAS" on Facebook.
Austin police revealed that Jones was homeless and lived with Ruiz and his father, Pontrey Simon, in the couple's South Austin apartment. Ruiz was reportedly bipolar, but has not taken medication in many years.
Pontrey had originally planned to kill his little sister by breaking her neck but later changed his mind and planned to murder his step-mother instead. Jones later told authorities that he got a knife from the kitchen dishwasher and placed it under the couch "for later use."
Police said Jones’ father and the victim watched the Cowboys game on the couch. Pontrey had gone out several times for fresh air and when he returned he noticed Magdalena was "disrespecting his father and gloating about how the Cowboys won the game."
Jones retrieved the knife he had hidden before walking behind the couch. He lunged over Ruiz and stabbed her repeatedly in the chest. Jones' father jumped in to stop the attack. After a brief tussle, Pontrey stripped himself naked and took off.
The suspect was was located about 10 minutes later, lying naked in the grass on South Congress Avenue, where he was taken into custody by police.
Jones is being charged with felony first-degree murder and his bond has been set at $500,000.
Police said they responded to the 2713 block of South congress Avenue at 10:39 p.m.
There, police said they found the victim, identified as Magdalena Ruiz, 35, with multiple stab wounds to her chest. Officers said they began CPR efforts until paramedics could arrive on the scene. Ruiz was transported to a South Austin hospital where she died.
