Preschool Teacher Charged With Sexual Assault Of 3-Year-Old Girl During Naptime [VIDEO]By: Monya Fleming
A preschool teacher at a Catholic school in Pennsylvania has been charged with sexually assaulting a three-year-old girl. Michael Barbee, 32, who was a teacher at the school's Early Learning Center, is accused of forcibly touching the toddler during nap time.
The child reportedly complained of being in pain during naptime. The little girl later told authorities she was assaulted by her teacher, "Mr. Michael," according to the arresting affidavit.
Barbee came to police headquarters for questioning Feb. 10 and initially denied any sexual contact with the child, the affidavit states.
He agreed to a polygraph test, which was administered by a Montgomery County detective, after which he reportedly changed his story and admitted to being the only adult in the room with the victim and other children during naptime.
Barbee admitted he put his hand down the 3-year-old girl's pants and sexually assaulted her for approximately 10 seconds after she had called him "stupid."
The criminal complaint shows that Barbee admitted this contact was of a sexual nature.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia said in a statement that Barbee was placed on administrative leave after officials learned of the criminal investigation. Barbee was fired after the parish learned of his arrest.
Kenneth Gavin, spokesman for the archdiocese, stated that parents with children in the Early Learning Center Program and in the parish school had been notified about the horrific incident.
The Early Learning Center is located in a building separate from the parish school, and Barbee had no duties in the parish school building, according to Gavin.
"These charges are serious and disturbing," Gavin said, adding that the archdiocese was cooperating with authorities.
"There were no prior indications that Mr. Barbee was involved in activity of this nature," Gavin said. "Prior to beginning his term of employment with St. Francis of Assisi Parish, appropriate criminal background checks as well as child-abuse clearances had been obtained and he completed mandatory Safe Environment Training programs."
Barbee's charges include involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, endangering the welfare of children and unsworn falsification to authorities among others.
His next scheduled court date is Feb. 22. Barbee remains in custody at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility on $750,000 bail.
