YEAR IN REVIEW: 10 Highest Paid Celebs in 2016

YEAR IN REVIEW: 10 Highest Paid Celebs in 2016

Each year Forbes releases their list of the world’s highest- celebrities, and this year some of our favorite black celebs have topped the enviable list. There are some names that always seem to make their way on the list, but a few others might surprise you.

1. Kevin Hart- $87.5 Million

The comedian turned actor has been working his butt off so it should be no surprise that he made it on to the Forbes list at number 6. The 37-year old is the first comedian to ever make more than veteran Jerry Seinfeld, which is a feat in itself. During the period of June 2015-June 2016 Kevin played over 100 shows with each stop grossing over one million dollars. He’s also had great success with endorsement deals for H&M, Hyundai and Foot Locker. He’s also caught the acting bug starring in films such as Secret Life of Pets, Central Intelligence, Ride Along 2, as well as his documentary, What Now.

2. LeBron James- $77 Million

The basketball player makes the cut at number 11, but he’s actually the 3rd highest paid athlete in the world at the young age of 31. (Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant are ranked 1st and 2nd). Let’s just say 2016 was a good year for LeBron; not only did he make the NBA finals for the 6th straight year, he also led his team the Cavaliers to an NBA title —a historic feat that hasn’t been accomplished by the Cavaliers in 42 years. The team resigned James for a 3 year deal worth over 100 million dollars. He is also signed to a lifetime contract with Nike (the first time Nike has EVER bestowed this on anyone). Outside of the sporting arena, James has a 15.8 million dollar investment from Time Warner for his multi-Platform Media Company, and Entertainment Company.

3. Rihanna- $75 Million

Known affectionately as ‘Bad Gal RiRi’ this Caribbean queen is clearly headed for world domination. Forbes ranks her number 13 on their list, but she’s number 1 in our hearts. After releasing her successful album ‘Anti’, the pop star embarked on her Anti World Tour which ran from March to November, and although we’re still waiting on the final figures, some predict the tour made over 50 million dollars. Rihanna’s total figure is as a result of album sales, radio hits and several endorsement deals with companies such as Puma, Samsung, Stance, and Dior.

4. Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs-$62 Million

You may not see P Diddy popping up on the MTV hit list but that doesn’t mean he’s not busy making money. The 47 year old entrepreneur who ranks number 22 on the list, dabbles in several business ventures, the most lucrative being Cîroc Vodka. Diddy rakes in his millions thanks to his Bad Boy record label, Deleon Tequila, Sean John clothing line, Revolt TV, and his fitness water brand in partnership with actor Mark Wahlberg, known as AQUAhydrate.

5. Kevin Durant-$56 Million

Durant is ranked number 26 on the list and is actually the 5th highest paid athlete of 2016. The basketball player seems to make the bulk of his earnings from his 300 million dollar, 10 year deal with Nike. His partnership with Neff and Foot Locker for his underwear line which was launched in 2015 also garners him a good chunk of cash, not to mention his recent, two year contract with the Golden State Warriors.

6. The Weeknd - $55 Million

As a newcomer on the list, being ranked number 30 is nothing to scoff at —especially at the young age of 26.  The Canadian singer has his album, ‘Beauty Behind the Music’ to thank in large part for this new status. It became the number 5 best-selling U.S album of 2015. His sold out world tour which followed the album’s release, a deal with Live Nation, endorsement deals and music sales also contributed to his earnings.

7. Beyoncé - $54 Million

The Queen B is no stranger to the Forbes list; she has made the cut several times over the years. This time around she takes the number 34 spot.  The super talented artist launched her 6th   album in April of this year titled ‘Lemonade’ exclusively on Tidal—her husband’s music streaming company which she also has investments in. The album debuted at number 1, and her epic ‘Formation World Tour,’ which followed the album’s release, earned over 200 million dollars in ticket sales alone. Adding to her millions are her multi-million dollar endorsement deals with companies such as Pepsi, and H&M. Keep in mind that she also has stakes in WTRMLN WTR, a sports drink company, 22 Days Nutrition, a vegan delivery service, as well as her own activewear clothing line, Ivy Park.

8. Jay Z - $53.5 Million

Following closely behind his wife Beyoncé, is rapper and hip-hop mogul Jay Z who takes the number 36 spot. Actually, Jay and Queen B are the highest paid celebrity couple of 2016 with combined earnings of $107.5 million. The rapper hasn’t released an album or toured in a while, but business ventures such as his Tidal streaming company which has signed huge artists such as Beyoncé, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, J Cole and Rihanna—just to name a few, certainly brings in the big bucks. Jay Z also has an entertainment company, Roc Nation, D’ Usse´ Cognac, and Armand de Brignac champagne.

9. Cam Newton - $53 Million

Here’s another newcomer to the highest paid celebrities of 2016 list. Cam Newton is known as much for his eccentric fashion as he is for his talents on the football field, and both contribute greatly to his wealth.  He is ranked number 36 overall but is the 7th highest paid athlete in 2016. His salary earns him a large chunk of his millions —41.1 million to be exact — thanks to his $103.8 million, five year deal with the Carolina Panthers. However in addition, his extended deal with Under Armour in 2015 earns him an estimated $1 million per year. He also has endorsement deals with EA Sports, L’Oréal, Oikos and Gatorade.

10.) Lewis Hamilton - $46 Million

Rounding out this top-ten list is British racecar driver, Lewis Hamilton — the only one in his field to make the cut. Ranking at number 49, Lewis is also the 11th highest paid athlete in the world. He has endorsement deals with L’Oréal, Bombardier, IWC and Monster Energy which raked in about $4 million this year. In 2015 he also signed a 3-year contract extension to drive for Mercedes’ F 1 team, which reportedly paid out over $140 million dollars this year; oh and don’t forget the bonuses!
