The Obamas are known for being a tight-knit family. Now, President Barack Obama is reflecting on his time in the White House with his two young daughters, Malia and Sasha, referring to them as his sanctuary.

In an article entitled “How the Presidency Made Me A Better Father,” President Obama recounts the difficulties he and his wife Michelle faced after the birth of their first child. The two were able to afford three months with their newborn before Michelle took up part-time work and Obama returned to his work in state legislature, which required travel to Springfield, and teaching at the University of Chicago Law School. He notes the privileges that the couple was afforded, including child care and take-out meals to ease them into the parenting role. “Our jobs afforded us the kind of flexibility that many working families simply don’t have,” the statesman noted.

The Obamas also faced the all-too-familiar fight of managing money, as they dealt with two children and student loans.  Many household duties fell to Michelle, who continued to work.

The president notes his wife’s resilience during the pressures of their marriage. “Things didn’t get any easier when I was elected to the Senate and had to commute back and forth to Washington every week. Then our lives were thrown completely out of balance during a presidential campaign that kept me on the road almost constantly—leaving Michelle to carry an even heavier load for longer stretches of time. That’s why I call her the rock of our family—because she is. She always has been.”

However, the move to the White House actually made it easier for the Obamas to be together. “I’ve been able to make Malia’s tennis matches and Sasha’s dance recitals. Sasha let me help coach her basketball team—the Vipers. They won the title. I’ve even experienced what all dads dread: watching my daughter go to her first prom. In high heels.”

The president also tells of the Obamas’ regularly schedule evening meals, where they converse about subjects that any average family would. “I ask Sasha and Malia the usual annoying parental questions: How was school? What are your friends up to? Have you done your homework? What are you thinking about? In return, they spend a lot of time teasing me about my big ears or stodgy suits—and Michelle is always happy to join them.”
