Beyonce doesn’t just slay in concert or on the dance floor, she slays in court too. The 35-year-old singer is not having it when it comes to the $20 million lawsuit she’s facing for sampling a New Orleans artist.

The singer is being sued for $20 million by the estate of Anthony Barré aka Messy Mya. Messy Mya is a New Orleans artist who posted a video on YouTube prior to his death. Beyonce took a sample of his voice and lyrics from the video and used it for her infamous single “Formation”. The song is featured on her latest album Lemonade.

Recently, Beyonce’s team filed paperwork, asking a federal judge in Louisiana to throw the case out. Beyonce claims that her team licensed the YouTube videos from Mr. Barré’s family, specifically his sister who appointed herself as the administrator of his estate. According to the paperwork, even if a license wasn’t obtained, the use of 10 or fewer seconds of audio from the YouTube videos is protected under the fair-use doctrine. It continued by saying that Beyonce “transformed” the raw material “in the creation of new information, new aesthetics, new insights and understandings…(the) very type of activity that the fair-use doctrine intends to protect for the enrichment of society.”

Well, guess that’s all folks. Seems like Beyonce and her lawyers have everything in order. No need to continue with this any further. She has clearly won this case and hopefully, this matter doesn’t go any further.

Mind you, the whole case is based on Barré’s estate claiming that they “no acknowledgment, no credit, no remuneration of any kind for “Formation”, meaning that Beyonce never contacted them or gave them any money. What they really meant was that they wanted to hit Beyonce up one more time to see if she could make it rain on them.

This is just a classic case of someone seeing an opportunity to get some money. Whoever is in charge of filing this lawsuit against Beyonce should be ashamed of themselves. Clearly, she followed all the rules and obtained the sample legally. Even more surprising, she went straight to the source and this is how she gets treated for being respectful.

This is a lesson to the rest of the artist out there. Have your attorneys ready so you don’t have to get ready.
