Empire director Lee Daniels sure is great at catching headlines, apparently.

Cardi B's star has risen to heights many didn't initially anticipate, but Lee says he knew that the rapper was destined for greatness, right from the get-go.

During a chat on TMZ's Raq Rants, Lee noted that he fell in love with Cardi B after just one meeting. He added that he even asked for a selfie video with her at the time…and that was the catalyst that propelled her career forward.

He also claimed the femcee auditioned for a role on his hit FOX TV series, Star, almost three years ago.

"My favorite hip-hop artist today is Cardi B," he explained. "I was looking for somebody for Star and she came in to audition for me and I said, 'Do you mind if I [take a video]?... Mona [Scott-Young] told me she hired her [for Love & Hip Hop] from my Instagram."

Give this interview a watch.

And check out the clip he’s talking about.

How funny!

Cardi charmed viewers on Love & Hip-Hop New York, during seasons six and seven, but soon reportedly ended up leaving the show because her schedule became way too full to continue filming. Which we actually buy because she’s everywhere and has been for a while.

Just the other day, the media mogul set off the Internet with his comments about Mo'Nique, who previously accused him (and a few others) of badmouthing her around the industry.

"There's levels to that," he continued, in response to the interviewer telling him he "gave Mo'Nique an award”. "And for her to think that I could do anything but, I don't know, I don't, like, it ain't even worth the conversation. Like, she needs to shut up!"

"No one blackballed her. Mo'Nique blackballed [herself] and for her to continue to talk about Oprah and myself and Tyler [Perry] is disrespectful," he shared, claiming that the intimacy level they both experienced while working together was like "making love without [actually making love]"

Lee Daniels wants no questions remaining on the table after he explains what went down with Mo’Nique.

Anyway, we are super happy that Cardi B is continuing to deliver smash hits and we aren’t sure that another path would have landed her exactly where she is now. Not as thrilled about her messy relationship with her (ugh) husband, Offset, but what can you do?

We are looking forward to seeing their soon-to-be-born baby.
