Father Pleads Guilty To Beating 2-Month-Old Son To Death Because He Wouldn't Stop Crying

The Maryland father accused of fatally punching his infant son because he was crying, later burying the baby boy in the woods last year has pleaded guilty in the infant’s death.

Antoine Petty, 33, of Upper Marlboro was convicted of first-degree child abuse resulting in the death of his 2-month-old son, Antoine Flemons.

Prosecutors stated that the baby began crying and Petty's wife was unable to console him. Petty then took the infant outside and punched him. The 2-month-old showed signs of distress and soon died.

The couple reportedly panicked and decided to put their dead son in their car, a 1998 Lincoln town car hearse, for 24 hours before taking the body to a wooded area behind a high school and burying the infant in a shallow grave.

The child was buried for nearly a month until relatives reported him missing, according to police. Authorities questioned the parents of the baby, who finally led investigators to the burial location. The body was recovered in October.

Court documents in the tragic case stated:

"On September 20, 2016, the infant baby boy, Antoine Flemons, was crying and screaming for several hours. Both the parents tried to pacify the child but to no avail. A frustrated Petty then took the baby to the balcony of their apartment and in a fit of rage punched the infant several times in the torso to quiet him. When the child did not stop crying, he brought the baby back inside, kept him on the floor, and continued punching until the baby started bleeding from his nose and mouth.

"Seconds later, the child became unresponsive. The couple panicked and left the baby inside their 1998 Lincoln Town car for over 24 hours. The duo then drove their car to a wooded area nearby where they buried the child in a shallow grave."

Antoine Petty is facing up to 40 years in prison, facing sentencing in October. His wife, Geneice, is awaiting trial on involuntary manslaughter and accessory after the fact to first-degree murder charges.

Prosecutors intend to seek the maximum penalty for Petty. Gina Ford, a spokeswoman for the Prince George's County State's Attorney's Office, said, "His actions were so incredibly heinous that he deserves every day of that prison sentence. This was a defenseless 2-month-old child … Rather than consoling his son he takes his son and beats him."
