Jaleel White is beloved for his role as the bumbling nerd Steve Urkel from the television sitcom Family Matters. Originally envisioned as a one-time character, Urkel eventually became the protagonist of the series until its run finished in 1997. Urkel is now considered an icon of popular culture, particular notable for his gangly look and geeky glasses. However, White no longer looks like that at age thirty-nine.

While best known for his Urkel role, White has had a long and varied career that he began on the advice of his preschool teacher. Like many stars, he began work in commercials; notably, he collaborated in a JELL-O commercial alongside Bill Cosby.

White was then featured in a number of small roles on The Jeffersons, Charlie and Company, Good Morning, Miss Bliss, Cadets, Mr. Belvedere, and One to Grow On. In September 1990, he landed his biggest role at that point in the television movie Camp Cucamonga alongside upcoming star Jennifer Aniston.

At age twelve, White finally hit the big leagues with the role of Steve Urkel on Family Matters. He also worked behind-the-scenes on the show, writing several episodes. The show lasted nine seasons before ending in 1997 as one of the longest lasting sitcoms with a predominately African-American cast.

While the role brought White fame, he grew tired of the role due to typecasting. He remarked in 1999 that "If you ever see me do that character again, take me out and put a bullet in my head and put me out of my misery."

Many of White’s early post-Family Matters role were voice acting, such as roles in Quest for Camelot and Our Friend, Martin, as well as being the voice for SEGA character Sonic in all of the early 2000s television shows based on the video game character.

Aside from a critically acclaimed role in 2006’s Dreamgirls, White now mostly sticks to guest appearances on television series, including The Game, Castle, and Hawaii Five-0.

He now frequently maintains his social presence with his Instagram @jaleelwhite, where he posts pictures of his day-to-day activities, adorable pictures of his daughter, and memes, of course.
