Kevin Gates may still be behind bars, but that isn't keeping the rapper from releasing a new project. Gates announced that his new album, By Any Means, will be released on Sept. 22. The rapper also released a new single titled "Had To."

Gates released two songs previously from jail, "What If" in April and the track "No Love" in July. 

Gates was originally sentenced to serve 180 days in jail in late October after a jury found him guilty of kicking an 18-year-old woman named Miranda Dixon during his concert at Rumors Nightclub in August 2015. He told jurors that he was scared and acted in self-defense when he was being pulled off the stage and he "just kicked at the hands that were grabbing me."

In video footage of the incident, Gates appears to have kicked the young woman in the abdomen with his foot. The rapper was sentenced to 180 days in jail and one year of probation.

Gates was set to be released from Polk County jail in Florida on March 24, after serving out the 180-day sentence.

The rapper was being processed for his release, but things hit a snag when authorities discovered an outstanding felony warrant from a weapons charge in Illinois.

Gates had reportedly failed to appear in court for a felony gun case twice in 2013. Kevin turned himself in and was ordered to serve 30 months in jail in Chicago.


According to court records, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Neil Linehan gave Gilyard credit for 34 days already spent in jail in the case.

Gates shared a handwritten note to his loyal fans that read: "Dear loyal fans, Disallow yourselves to be troubled in my time of absence. All of the great ones who came before and will come after me: Have had to go through this. By this I am speaking in reference to hardship. A great person is measured by all of the great test they can undergo and still remain to to who they are. What that being said, 'I'm him.' I love you all. In closing I remain the same. Forever, Kevin Gates."
