Report - Man Arrested for Shooting His 17-Month-Old Daughter in the Stomach [VIDEO]
A 17-month-old little girl remained hospitalized in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the stomach on Tuesday. The father of the child, Cortez Reed, was arrested over the incident, although reports suggest a 3-year-old child in the home accidentally shot the young girl.

Cincinnati police said officers found the girl shot in the stomach just before 10:30 a.m. Monday in the 4200 block of Fehr Road. Police began hunting down 27-year-old Reed. He contacted authorities and promised to turn himself in to police, but he was found at a friend's apartment that afternoon and arrested.

The Hamilton County prosecutor stated during Reed's appearance in court on Tuesday, "The defendant has shown a pattern of trying to frustrate this investigation and trying to flee from police."

Reed reportedly had an argument with the girl's mother overnight and she had put all of his belongings in the yard of the home. They made up and she let him move his possessions back inside the home. That is apparently how two handguns in a shoebox were found by children in the home.

A sibling found a gun in a shoebox that Cortez had left on the floor. The mother of the children stated that the 3-year-old child must have found the gun and shot the 17-month-old in the stomach.

Reed claimed he was in the bathroom when he heard the sound of a gunshot on Monday morning. The man then took off with the guns, hiding a .38 caliber handgun in a box in the woods and taking a 9mm handgun with him.

Police launched an investigation and used K9 units to search for Reed, who called at around 10:45 a.m. claiming he would turn himself in to authorities. The man was found at a friend named Tonya Roberts' apartment at around 5:45 p.m. and was arrested.

Prosecutors stated that Tonya picked up Reed in a park and helped hide the 9mm handgun, which Cortez admitted he bought on the street. The weapon had actually been reported stolen in October in Sharonville.
Reed is charged with endangering children, obstructing official business, tampering with evidence and receiving stolen property. He was being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center on a $145,000 bond.

Roberts has also been charged in connection with the case. She is charged with obstructing justice and tampering with evidence. She was being held on a $10,000 bond.

Reed's attorney told the court on  Tuesday that Cortez works as a tattoo artist and has no prior felony convictions. Court documents show he was convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence after he punched his aunt in the face in 2010. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Prosecutors said six young children lived in the home with Reed and his daughter's mother. Magistrate Paul DeMott ordered those children -- four with Reed and one with a different father -- to be placed temporarily in the same foster home. The next hearing on their custody is March 23.

Cincinnati police called the shooting "accidental."

The 17-month-old little girl is in critical, but stable condition after having surgery at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
