Mary J. Blige Explains How She Made No Money From Oscar-Nominated Performance in ‘Mudbound’
Mary J. Blige’s estranged husband and former manager Kendu Isaacs seems to only have eyes for one thing. Okay, two.

Ha?

Mary recently earned rave reviews for her role in Mudbound. But she apparently didn’t line her wallet with a huge paycheck from the project.

On the contrary, it seems.

According to documents obtained by The Blast, Mary is arguing against paying Kendu any spousal support, blaming him for her current financial woes.

She states that the costs for her to participate in the film outweighed the compensation she received. Because of her monetary situation, she has had to seek out new projects to generate income…but the roles she has accepted in TV and on film aren’t necessarily lucrative; they just support her brand and image.
The document states; “The film Mudbound for example has produced no net income for Petitioner, but has garnered her critical acclaim and award nominations. Pursuant to the Mudbound contract, the expenses Petitioner was required to pay in connection with filming Mudbound were greater than her salary.”

Her main source of income for the time being is tied to touring. However, she claims that, as a legacy artist, there is no market for her to embark on a major world tour every year.

Oh and Mary doesn’t own her music catalog and owes $25 million for advances she’s taken throughout her career.

She also states that paying any support to her ex would be unfair, due to the $12 million debt that they accrued as a couple, when he was her manager. (According to her she’s still in the process of paying that off). And she feels that, instead of working, Kendu has been unwilling to get a job and views her as his “bank.”

Uh, probably correct.
Anyway, the two are set to see each other in court again next month. Should be, as usual, a mess.

Because, believe us, it has been a disaster since Mary filed for divorce in 2016.

Her representative confirmed the split at the time, stating, "Ms. Blige is saddened to say it is true that she has filed for divorce saying sometimes things don't work how we hoped they would, but there is a divine plan and a reason for everything."

Oh and it seems that he had been fooling around on her. Not even going to get all the money stuff right now, beyond mentioning that Kendu reportedly threatened to bring in the Feds if Mary didn’t cough up the amount he was demanding from her.

Yup.

Kendu did once claim that Mary' disparaging public remarks about him (as well as the lyrics about him in her songs "Set Me Free" and "Love Yourself") had affected his ability to find work.
