A Louisiana couple have been charged with attempted first-degree murder after their newborn was found in the trash after they called for help, reporting the woman suffered a miscarriage.

Thelma Kirkland, 30, and Carl Hall, 31, of Alexandria, Louisiana, were arrested Friday and charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Alexandria Police were called to the 1700 block of Bush Avenue at around 5:40 pm. on February 21. Emergency responders were dispatched after a 911 call reported a woman had suffered a miscarriage and required medical treatment.

The emergency responders were treating Kirkland when they discovered the newborn, who was still breathing, in the trash.

Kirkland and the newborn were both rushed to a local hospital, where the baby remains on life support.

Police are releasing few details, including whether or not the newborn had been born prematurely or the gender of the baby.

Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators learned through their investigation that Kirkland had given birth, and she and Hall placed the baby in the garbage can, officials said.

The couple then waited for more than an hour before calling for medical attention.

The investigation led to the arrest of both parents, Thelma Kirkland and Carl Hall. Both parents were arrested on Friday, February 23.

The pair were taken into custody and booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center. Kirkland and Hall were charged with attempted first-degree murder.

The bail for Kirkland and Hall were both set at at $500,000, according to jail records.

The horrific case remains under investigation.

On February 20, a day before Thelma gave birth, she had taken to Facebook to share a post that read, "Every day may not be good...but there's something good in every day."

Kirkland's friends on Facebook appeared to be rather shocked over her actions, with many insisting she is a good person.

Her Facebook profile is full of encouraging quotes and biblical references and verses.

Kirkland also appears to already be the other of one child.

Kirkland's profile shows an adorable little girl, which certainly appears to be her daughter. The little girl appears to be around 6 months old in the photos, which were posted on April of 2017.

Another picture posted to Facebook in April 2016 shows Kirkland with the newborn baby girl.
