Watch A Younger Dave Chappelle Rap In a HIV/AIDS Prevention PSA Video

Dave Chapelle knows that AIDS is certainly no joke. Long before being becoming a household name as a sketch comedian and actor, a very young Chapelle rapped about the dangers of HIV/AIDS in a public service announcement to promote awareness of the disease and the quilt memorial.
The PSA was released sometime in the mid-80s to coincide with the development of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in Washington, D.C. The quilt contains patchwork art in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to the disease. The quilt, which began in 1987, now includes over forty-eight thousand panels to honor the victims.

The video shows a young Chapelle (certainly long before his debut role in 1993’s Robin Hood: Men in Tights) talking to a friend about hooking up with a girl he barely knows. His friend warns him that the girl is known to “shoot up” and could therefore have AIDS. Chapelle’s character brushes him off and dismisses that he could be affected.

The clip then transitions into Chapelle rapping about the disease, the stigma associated with it, what can be done to treat it, and urging viewers without AIDS to treat the affected with kindness and respect. “It’s the ignorant ones that really seem to be ill, ‘cuz what they don’t know is ignorance kills,” he raps. Another rapper and a beat-boxer join him as video clips show the development of the memorial quilt.
The California School for the Deaf is also highlighted for their work in the video.

Check out the resurfaced clip below. Let us know how you feel about young Chapelle’s rapping skills..
