For some reason when we talk about rich black men and women we often, mention a select group to include Oprah, certain rappers and a few basketball players. However, there are actually other black people amassing vast fortunes all over the world. 

Mohammed Al-Amoudi –$8.9 billion 
Mohammed is a 70-year-old, Saudi Arabian businessman who earned his billions from construction, real estate and oil refineries after starting his company in 1974. He is the largest individual investor in Ethiopia and owns oil refineries in Morocco and Sweden. His company supplies tea leaves to Lipton and coffee beans to American coffee giant, Starbucks.


Aliko Dangote –$12.8 billion 
Known as the richest man in Africa today, Aliko Dangote has built his massive fortune through his company, the Dangote Group.  One enterprise within the group, Dangote Cement is the largest cement producer in the African continent. The other companies under the Dangote umbrella are active in 15 African countries. The 56-year-old billionaire who resides in Nigeria is married with three kids.

Isabel dos Santos -$3.3 billion
Isabel amassed her large wealth through investments, which includes a 25 percent stake in the Angolian mobile phone company Unitel, and 25 percent stake in Angolian bank, Banco BIC. She currently resides in Angola and is the daughter of Angolian president, José Eduardo dos Santos.  As of 2016, the 43 year old is not just the richest woman in Angola, but in Africa. Additionally, Forbes also ranks her number 8 out of the 50 richest people in Africa. 


Mike Adenuga –$6.6 billion 
This Nigerian business tycoon owns the second largest mobile phone network in Nigeria, namely Globacom. He also owns Proline Investments a real estate firm with, hundreds of properties in Nigeria, and he operates six oil blocks in the Niger Delta. He is ranked as the second richest man in Nigeria and the 7th richest in Africa. He is married with seven kids. 


Folorunsho Alakija- $1.83 billion
Africa’s 13th richest woman currently serves as vice- chair of an oil exploration company in Nigeria, Famfa Oil. However, her first company was actually a fashion label that catered to Nigeria's elite women. This self-made billionaire currently resides in Nigeria and is married with four kids.


Patrice Motsepe –$1.43 billion
This self-made billionaire started amassing his fortune in 1994, by purchasing low-producing gold mine shafts and making them profitable. He is currently the founder and chairman of African Rainbow Minerals, and made history in 2009 after becoming Africa’s first black billionaire in 2009.  Patrice is also the first African to sign Bill Gates' and Warren Buffett's ‘Giving Pledge’, in which he promised to give at least half his fortune to charity. Patrice resides in South Africa with his wife and three children. 


Oprah Winfrey-$2.9 billion 
She is probably the most well-known of all the people on the list.  She is an actor, producer/director, TV personality and philanthropist. The long reigning queen of daytime accrued her fortune over the years thanks to her hugely successful talk show, The Oprah Show, a string of movies (acting and producing) and some worthwhile business ventures. In 2015 Oprah bought a 10 percent stake in the diet empire Weight Watchers and she also owns her own cable network aptly called OWN.
